New Video Games for the Week of October 30

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag

The pirate adventure Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is nearly as long and almost as beautiful as an actual vacation to the tropics.

This new video game’s main story line casts its player as the fictional early-18th-century pirate Edward Kenway and can run 30 hours to its narrative conclusion, still leaving half of its glimmering Caribbean unexplored. In that time and in the adventures beyond it, virtual travelers may explore a period-precise Havana and Kingston, Jamaica; visit Nassau, the Bahamas, and Tulum, Mexico; and sail to dozens of islands. They may see churches, slip through plantations, kill British and Spanish authorities (to a pirate, they’re all bad) and take to the high seas to plunder a galleon, harpoon a whale or follow a treasure map to a buried chest.

Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened by Allie Brosh

Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened by Allie Brosh

Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices. Touching, absurd, and darkly comic, Allie Brosh’s highly anticipated book Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations.

This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written. Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to.

Fleeing from Westeros with a price on his head, Tyrion Lannister, too, is making his way east—with new allies who may not be the ragtag band they seem. In a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics lead a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, to the greatest dance of all.

Dark Witch: Book One of The Cousins O'Dwyer Trilogy by Nora Roberts

Dark Witch: Book One of The Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy by Nora Roberts

With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends.

Ireland.

County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors’ blood and magic have flowed through generations—and where her destiny awaits. Iona arrives in Ireland with nothing but her Nan’s directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses. Not far from the luxurious castle where she is spending a week, she finds her cousins, Branna and Connor O’Dwyer. And since family is family, they invite her into their home and their lives.

When Iona lands a job at the local stables, she meets the owner, Boyle McGrath. Cowboy, pirate, wild tribal horsemen, he’s three of her biggest fantasy weaknesses all in one big, bold package. Iona realizes that here she can make a home for herself—and live her life as she wants, even if that means falling head over heels for Boyle. But nothing is as it seems. An ancient evil has wound its way around Iona’s family tree and must be defeated. Family and friends will fight with each other and for each other to keep the promise of hope—and love—alive…

Bits & Bytes: Latest TV and Movie News Updates

charmed

CBS may be casting a spell in its development offices just in time for Halloween, as the Eye is working on a reboot of witch drama “Charmed.” Variety has confirmed the reboot is in its early stages with just a script deal, but has “Party of Five” co-creator Chris Keyser and Sydney Sidner co-writing the show. Keyser will exec producer, and Sidner will co-exec produce. CBS TV Studios is producing with Tannenbaum Company. The reboot is described as a “re-imagining of the original series centered around four sisters who discover their destiny – to battle against the forces of evil using their witchcraft.”

Fox has given a back-nine pickup to “Dads,” the frosh live-action comedy from Seth MacFarlane and “Ted” scribes Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild.

The order for the 20th Century Fox TV comedy had been expected, especially after Fox renewed its other new Tuesday comedy “Brooklyn Nine Nine” last week. “Dads,” which stars Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi as two guys who live with their oddball fathers (Martin Mull and Peter Riegert), is notable for being the net’s first multi-camera comedy in years.

“Dads” has so far delivered only modest numbers in the lead-off 8 p.m. slot. But its delayed-viewing stats are respectable and the show is a draw with young men. For its first three telecasts, “Dads” has drawn 14.7 million viewers when DVR, VOD and streaming numbers are factored in with its live ratings. In its most recent outing, “Dads” delivered 3.6 million viewers and 1.4 rating/4 share in adults 18-49, in Nielsen’s live plus same-day rating.

After a lengthy search, Legendary Entertainment has found its leading man for the upcoming adaptation of “Warcraft,” tapping Travis Fimmel to star.

No formal offer has been presented yet but sources say he is their guy for one of the four leads in the film.

Fimmel is the star of History Channel’s “Vikings,” which is currently in production on season two. Duncan Jones (“Source Code”) will direct the “Worldcraft” feature from a script by Charles Leavitt. Paula Patton is in talks to co-star and Colin Farell also has an offer but his deal is not as far along. Details on the plot or the character Fimmel will play are still unknown. Based on the Blizzard Entertainment game “World of Warcraft,” studios have been trying for some time to get this adaptation off the ground with Sam Raimi at one point attached to direct.

Walking Dead

AMC has handed a fifth season to juggernaut zombie drama “The Walking Dead.”

Program ranks as the number one show on TV among adults 18-49, and the season four premiere drew over 16 million viewers, a new record for AMC. With L+3 numbers taken into account, “Walking Dead” secures over 20 million viewers.

“We are very happy to make what has to be one of the most anti-climactic renewal announcements ever: ‘The Walking Dead’ is renewed for a fifth season,” said Charlie Collier, AMC president. “This is a show that has erased traditional distinctions between cable and broadcast. Its expanding base of passionate fans has grown every season, most recently – and most notably – with the season four premiere earlier this month, which broke viewership records for the series and became the biggest non-sports telecast in cable history. On behalf of the incredible team on both sides of the camera, thank you to the fans and here’s to more ‘Dead.’”

ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” edged up (2.1/5 in 18-49, 13.28m), finishing up a tick vs. last week.

NBC and Fox were neck and neck for leadership among young adults on Monday, as the Peacock’s “The Voice” and “The Blacklist” held up nicely opposite the World Series.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, “The Voice” averaged a 4.2 rating/11 share in adults 18-49 and 13 million viewers overall from 8 to 10 p.m., on par with last week and winning in all four half-hours. And at 10, “The Blacklist” (3.1/8 in 18-49, 10.7 million viewers overall) looks to be up slightly vs. last week for a three-week high and a solid second-place finish among the broadcasters for its hour.

Marcia Wallace of ‘Newhart’ & ‘Simpsons’ Fame Dies at 70

marcia-wallace

You may not know the name, but you know the voice Marcia Wallace, voice of Mrs. Krabappel and star of ‘The Bob Newhart Show’ has died.

From Variety: Wallace won an Emmy for outstanding voiceover performance on “The Simpsons” in 1992. In a statement, “Simpsons” exec producer Al Jean called her “brilliant and gracious.”

“She was beloved by all at ‘The Simpsons’ and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character,” he said.

Earlier this year, “Simpsons” producers let it be known that the show intended to kill off a major character in the upcoming season. Jean said that Wallace’s character was not the one slated to die.

“Marcia’s passing is unrelated and again, a terrible loss for all who had the pleasure of knowing her,” Jean said. Born in Creston, Iowa, she moved to New York after graduating college and worked in off-Broadway productions. The role of the receptionist on “The Bob Newhart Show” was written specifically for her after she had appeared numerous times on “The Merv Griffin Show.”

Set the DVR: ‘Grimm’, ‘Dracula’, ‘The Carrie Diaries’, ‘Next Top Model: Guys and Girls’ Premiere Tonight!

Grimm – Season 3

“Grimm” is a drama series inspired by the classic Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tales. After Portland Homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli, “Turn the Beat Around”) discovers he’s descended from an elite line of criminal profilers known as “Grimms,” he increasingly finds his responsibilities as a detective at odds with his new responsibilities as a “Grimm.”

His attempts to shield his fiancée, Juliette Silverton (Bitsie Tulloch, “The Artist”), and his partner, Hank Griffin (Russell Hornsby, “Lincoln Heights”), from the hazards of his new life have reached a crisis, leaving Juliette in a mysterious coma and Hank on the verge of a mental breakdown.

With help from his confidants, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner, “The Ugly Truth”) – both reformed Grimm creatures, Nick must help those closest to him while still facing off against all manner of ancient evils, including royal lines dating back to the original profilers themselves, the Grimm Brothers. As Nick develops his ability to harness his inner Grimm, he begins to question what he once knew, never more so than when he is reunited with his mother (guest star Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, “Scarface”), also a Grimm, whom he thought dead for the past 20 years. Reggie Lee (“The Dark Knight Rises”) and Sasha Roiz (“Caprica”) also star as Sgt. Wu and Captain Renard, respectively.

Dracula – New

Golden Globe winner Jonathan Rhys Meyers (“The Tudors”) stars in this provocative new drama as one of the world’s most iconic characters.

It’s the late 19th century, and the mysterious Dracula has arrived in London, posing as an American entrepreneur who wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. He’s especially interested in the new technology of electricity, which promises to brighten the night – useful for someone who avoids the sun. But he has another reason for his travels: he hopes to take revenge on those who cursed him with immortality centuries earlier. Everything seems to be going according to plan… until he becomes infatuated with a woman who appears to be a reincarnation of his dead wife.

From the producers of the critically acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning hit “Downton Abbey” comes “Dracula,” a twisted, sophisticated and sexy take on Bram Stoker’s classic novel, proving that some stories never die. One-hour drama.

The Carrie Diaries – Season 2

It’s the summer of 1985, and, for the first time, 17-year-old Carrie Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb) can call Manhattan home. After her boyfriend Sebastian (Austin Butler) and best friend Maggie (Katie Findlay) betrayed her, Carrie is happy to accept the offer to spend the summer living in the downtown loft apartment of her Interview magazine boss Larissa (Freema Agyeman). But as summer turns to fall and Carrie heads into her senior year, she and her friends and family discover that letting go of old loves and embracing new dreams comes with some tough new realities but also incredible new opportunities. Based on the novels “The Carrie Diaries” and “Summer and the City” by Candace Bushnell, THE CARRIE DIARIES is from Fake Empire in association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Amy B. Harris (“Sex and the City,” “Gossip Girl”), Josh Schwartz (“Hart of Dixie,” “Gossip Girl”), Stephanie Savage (“Hart of Dixie,” “Gossip Girl”), Len Goldstein (“Hart of Dixie”) and Candace Bushnell.
