‘Fast 7’ Moves & ‘Apes’ Takes it’s Place

Fast 7 Moves & Apes Takes it's Place

From Variety: In anticipation of Universal moving “Fast and Furious 7” out of its summer slot, Fox has made a preemptive claim on the July 11, 2014 slot, moving up “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” from its original July 18 date.

Universal has yet to decide whether it will bump “Fast 7″ from summer 2014, though the film’s delayed production start following the death of star Paul Walker makes it unlikely that the film will be ready in time. The studio had no comment.

Fox, meanwhile, has been extremely aggressive with its “Planet of the Apes” re-booted franchise after the first film, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” became a surprise hit during late-summer 2011, grossing more than $480 million worldwide. “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” is being directed by Matt Reeves (“Let Me In”) and stars Gary Oldman, Keri Russell and Andy Serkis.

White House Down‘, ‘The Great Gatsby‘ & ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘ star Jason Clarke has been rumored to be on the shortlist to play John Connor in the next Terminator film. This coming on the heels of the news that ‘Game of Thrones’ star Emilia Clarke has been cast as his mother Sarah Connor.

The interesting part of this rumor is that Jason Clarke, 26 is 18 years younger than her son, if played by Clarke, who is 44. Given the nature of the franchise and its time-hopping scenarios, the answer is quite obvious.

Other actors who have played John Connor on film and TV include Christian Bale (Terminator Salvation), Thomas Dekker (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Nick Stahl (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines), Edward Furlong(Terminator 2: Judgment Day).

Sony Moves Ahead with ‘Venom’ & ‘Sinister Six’ Films

Sony Pictures Entertainment, in association with Marvel Entertainment, is expanding the Spider-Man franchise by turning to villains with “Venom” and “The Sinister Six.”

The studio, in an announcement late Thursday night, disclosed that a quintet of writers — Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard — will collaborate on overseeing the developing story over several films that will be produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. The five writers, along with the two producers and Marc Webb, have formed a “franchise brain trust” to expand the universe for the brand — licensed from Marvel — and to develop a continuous tone and thread throughout the films.

Webb directed last year’s franchise reboot “The Amazing Spider-Man” and the upcoming “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” Kurtzman, Orci and Pinkner wrote the screenplay for the latter, which Arad and Tolmach produced.

“This collaboration was born out of the great experience we and Marc had working with Alex, Bob, and Jeff on ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’” Arad and Tolmach said. “With more than fifty years’ wealth of stories in the comic books to draw upon for inspiration, the Spider-Man universe is truly boundless; in addition, the Spider-Man comics have the greatest rogues gallery of any series, and to have the chance to explore that on film is truly thrilling.”

Kurtzman, Orci and Pinkner are writing the screenplay for “The Amazing Spider-Man 3,” which the studio hopes Webb will direct. That film will go into production next fall for release on June 10, 2016. Sony made the announcement late Thursday night via the web site ElectoArrives.com.
