Ring in the New Year! Top 16 Time Travel Movies!

It’s that time of year again! Where we say goodbye to the past and ring in another year ahead! To celebrate the changing dates I have decided to gather a list of the Top 16 Time Travel Movies, now, what you may notice as you scroll down this list is that a few favorites are missing; ‘The Back to the Future Trilogy’, ‘The Terminator Series’ and ‘Bill & Ted’ films are all considered ‘Top 10…of all time’, so I removed them from this list. The rest are also great films, and perhaps some gems you may have missed! So enjoy The Top 16 Time Travel Movies!

#16 A Christmas Carol (1951)

Ebenezer Scrooge is a business man who thinks only of making money. For him Christmas is, in his own words, a humbug. It has been seven years since his friend and partner, Jacob Marley, died and on Christmas Eve Marley’s ghost tells him he is to be visited during the night by three spirits. The first is the Ghost of Christmas Past who re-visits some of the main events in Scrooge’s life to date, including his unhappy childhood, his happy apprenticeship to Mr. Fezziwig who cared for his employees, and the end of his engagement to a pretty young woman due to growing love of money. The Ghost of Christmas Present shows him how joyously is nephew Fred and his clerk Bob Cratchit celebrate Christmas with those they love. #15 The Jacket (2005)

The film centers on a wounded Gulf war veteran who returns to his native Vermont suffering from bouts of amnesia. He is hitching and gets picked up by a stranger, things go pear shaped when a cop pulls them over and is murdered by the stranger. The vet. is wrongly accused of killing the cop and lands up in an asylum. A quack doctor prescribes a course of experimental therapy, restraining him in a heavy duty straight jacket-like device, and locks him away in a body drawer of the basement morgue. During course of his treatment he gets flashbacks and visions of his future , where he can foresee he is to die in four days time. The catch is he doesn’t know how. #14 Galaxy Quest (1999)

Eighteen years after their sci-fi adventure show “Galaxy Quest” was canceled, actors Jason Nesmith, Gwen DeMarco, Alexander Dane, Tommy Webber, and Fred Kwan are making appearances at sci-fi conventions and store openings in costume and character. They’re wallowing in despair and at each other’s throats until aliens known as Thermians arrive and, having mistaken the show for fact and consequently modeling their entire culture around it, take them into space to save them from the genocidal General Sarris and his armada. #13 Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)

A 1960’s British hipster secret agent Austin Powers is brought out of cryofreeze to oppose his greatest arch-enemy Dr. Evil into the 1990s. 30 years later, Austin was then released and is now thawed back into action to once again battle Dr. Evil where he wakes up somewhere in Nevada and steals a nuclear weapon and holds the world hostage. After Austin is woken up to stop Dr. Evil he gets a new sexy sidekick Miss Vanessa Kensington, his ex-partner’s daughter and they go to Vegas where they must stop Dr. Evil’s outrageous plot to control the world for 100 billion dollars! #12 The Butterfly Effect (2004)

Evan Treborn grows up in a small town with his single, working mother and his friends. He suffers from memory blackouts where he suddenly finds himself somewhere else, confused. Evan’s friends and mother hardly believe him, thinking he makes it up just to get out of trouble. As Evan grows up he has fewer of these blackouts until he seems to have recovered. Since the age of seven he has written a diary of his blackout moments so he can remember what happens. #11 Army of Darkness (1992)

Ash finds himself stranded in the year 1300 AD with his car, his shotgun, and his chainsaw. Soon he is discovered and thought to be a spy for a rival kingdom and is taken prisoner. After proving his merit in The Pit, he decides to help the kingdom retrieve the Necronomicon (which will also help him return to his own time), which they need to battle the supernatural forces at play in the land. #10 Contact (1997)

The skeptical scientist Dr. Ellie Arroway researches extraterrestrial life with her team in Puerto Rico. When David Drumlin (Tom Skerritt) shuts-down the project, Ellie seeks for private funds to reopen her research in New Mexico. An anonymous millionaire provides the necessary funds and Ellie proceeds with her work. Four years later, she is contacted by alien forms from Vega that send a coded message. The millionaire S.R. Hadden that is financing the research deciphers the message and gives to Ellie the design of an intriguing machine. Ellie concludes that the equipment might be to transport a passenger to Vega. #9 Frequency (2000)

A rare atmospheric phenomenon allows a New York City firefighter to communicate with his son 30 years in the future via short-wave radio. The son uses this opportunity to warn the father of his impending death in a warehouse fire, and manages to save his life. However, what he does not realize is that changing history has triggered a new set of tragic events, including the murder of his mother. #8 Groundhog Day (1993)

Misanthropic TV weatherman/broadcaster, Phil Connors, is annoyed and despondent when he’s assigned the job of covering the annual Groundhog festivities in the small “Hick” town of Punxsutawney – making this his fourth in a row. The only noticeable upside is his attractive and good-natured producer. But the real nightmare begins when Phil ends up reliving the same day (Groundhog Day) over, and over again. #7 The Time Machine (2002)

Based on the classic sci-fi novel by H.G. Wells, scientist and inventor, Alexander Hartdegen, is determined to prove that time travel is possible. #6 Twelve Monkeys (1995)

An unknown and lethal virus has wiped out five billion people in 1996. Only 1% of the population has survived by the year 2035, and is forced to live underground. A convict (James Cole) reluctantly volunteers to be sent back in time to 1996 to gather information about the origin of the epidemic (who he’s told was spread by a mysterious “Army of the Twelve Monkeys”) and locate the virus before it mutates so that scientists can study it. #5 Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

The Borg have returned, in another attempt to conquer Earth. Disregarding orders, Captain Picard and the new Enterprise-E rush to save the Federation homeworld, only to get sucked back in time with the Borg as they attempt to interfere with the course of humankind’s evolution into a peaceful, unified race. If Zefram Cochrane (inventor of warp drive) does not make his flight (in the mid-21st century), a routine Vulcan mapping mission would not detect the warp signature, and first contact would not be made. #4 Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

Branded as fugitives by the Federation, the crew of the USS Enterprise dutifully returns to Earth to face charges for crimes committed in the course of rescuing Spock. But en route, it is learned that Earth is being ravaged by a space probe demanding a response from a lifeform that no longer exists. #3 Looper (2012)

#2 Star Trek (2009)

#1 Donnie Darko (2001)

Donnie Darko doesn’t get along too well with his family, his teachers and his classmates; but he does manage to find a sympathetic friend in Gretchen, who agrees to date him. He has a compassionate psychiatrist, who discovers hypnosis is the means to unlock hidden secrets. His other companion may not be a true ally. Donnie has a friend named Frank – a large bunny which only Donnie can see. When an engine falls off a plane and destroys his bedroom, Donnie is not there. Both the event, and Donnie’s escape, seem to have been caused by supernatural events. Donnie’s mental illness, if such it is, may never allow him to find out for sure.
