Brick Mansions

Brick Mansions

In a dystopian Detroit, abandoned brick mansions left from better times now house only the most dangerous criminals. Unable to control the crime, the police constructed a colossal containment wall around this area to protect the rest of the city. For undercover cop Damien Collier (Paul Walker) every day is a battle against corruption. For Lino (David Belle), every day is a fight to live an honest life. Their paths never should have crossed, but when drug kingpin, Tremaine (RZA) kidnaps Lino’s girlfriend, Damien reluctantly accepts the help of the fearless ex-convict, and together they must stop a sinister plot to devastate the entire city. With stylized action featuring thrilling Parkour stunts (David Belle is the co-founder of this physical training discipline), Brick Mansions puts an entertaining twist on the action genre.

The 2001 Clear Channel Memorandum List

Banned

I came across the most interesting factoid regarding music recently and felt like sharing it with you. In the days immediately following the September 11th 2001 attacks in New York and Washington Clear Channel Communications, a company that owned 1,200 radio stations at the time, issued a memo strongly suggesting that certain songs not be played due to them being “lyrically questionable”.

During the time immediately after the attacks, many television and radio stations altered normal programming in response to the events, and the rumor spread that Clear Channel and its subsidiaries had established a list of songs with lyrics Clear Channel deemed “questionable”. The list was not a demand not to play the songs listed, but rather a suggestion that they “might not want to play these songs.”

The list contains 165 songs, including all songs by Rage Against the Machine as well as certain songs recorded by multiple artists (for example “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” by Bob Dylan and the same song by Guns N’ Roses). The list features many artists from the 60’s to then present day 2000’s, many are obvious choices and may have deserved a temporary veto, out of respect, but some are curious choices at best.

I’ve listed almost all 165 songs and will highlight the ones that seem like odd choices, however, now some 13 years past the event I may be too far separated from that day to see the need to consider these songs “lyrically questionable”. It was a very different time then, nerves were on edge.

The 2001 Clear Channel Memorandum List of “lyrically questionable” Songs

All songs by Rage Against the Machine
Duck and Run – The Better Life
Down – 311
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap – AC/DC
Hells Bells – Back In Black
Highway to Hell – AC/DC
Safe In New York City – Stiff Upper Lip
Shoot to Thrill – Back In Black
Shot Down In Flames – Highway to Hell
T.N.T. – High Voltage

New Books – Week of April 22

The Target by David Baldacci

The Target by David Baldacci

The President knows it’s a perilous, high-risk assignment. If he gives the order, he has the opportunity to take down a global menace, once and for all. If the mission fails, he would face certain impeachment, and the threats against the nation would multiply. So the president turns to the one team that can pull off the impossible: Will Robie and his partner, Jessica Reel.

Together, Robie and Reel’s talents as assassins are unmatched. But there are some in power who don’t trust the pair. They doubt their willingness to follow orders. And they will do anything to see that the two assassins succeed, but that they do not survive.

As they prepare for their mission, Reel faces a personal crisis that could well lead old enemies right to her doorstep, resurrecting the ghosts of her earlier life and bringing stark danger to all those close to her. And all the while, Robie and Reel are stalked by a new adversary: an unknown and unlikely assassin, a woman who has trained her entire life to kill, and who has her own list of targets–a list that includes Will Robie and Jessica Reel.

Heaven's Queen by Rachel Bach

Heaven’s Queen by Rachel Bach

From the moment she took a job on Captain Caldswell’s doomed ship, Devi Morris’ life has been one disaster after another: government conspiracies, two alien races out for her blood, an incurable virus that’s eating her alive.

Now, with the captain missing and everyone — even her own government — determined to hunt her down, things are going from bad to impossible. The sensible plan would be to hide and wait for things to blow over, but Devi’s never been one to shy from a fight, and she’s getting mighty sick of running.

It’s time to put this crisis on her terms and do what she knows is right. But with all human life hanging on her actions, the price of taking a stand might be more than she can pay.

The Serpent Of Venice: A Novel by Christopher Moore

The Serpent Of Venice: A Novel by Christopher Moore

Venice, a long time ago. Three prominent Venetians await their most loathsome and foul dinner guest, the erstwhile envoy from the Queen of Britain: the rascal-Fool Pocket.

This trio of cunning plotters—the merchant, Antonio; the senator, Montressor Brabantio; and the naval officer, Iago—have lured Pocket to a dark dungeon, promising an evening of sprits and debauchery with a rare Amontillado sherry and Brabantio’s beautiful daughter, Portia.

But their invitation is, of course, bogus. The wine is drugged. The girl isn’t even in the city limits. Desperate to rid themselves once and for all of the man who has consistently foiled their grand quest for power and wealth, they have lured him to his death. (How can such a small man, be such a huge obstacle?). But this Fool is no fool . . . and he’s got more than a few tricks (and hand gestures) up his sleeve.

Greed, revenge, deception, lust, and a giant (but lovable) sea monster combine to create another hilarious and bawdy tale from modern comic genius, Christopher Moore.

Note: The book, too, is a veritable work of art. Rich creamy stock is enhanced by two-color printing, featuring part/chapter titles, running heads, and folios printed in red ink. The text block has blue-stained edges. The book opens to reveal two-page spread endpapers decorated with a sepia-toned antique map of Venice; an antique map of Italy graces the book’s front matter, printed in red. The jacket sports a matte finish with embossed author and title type; gold foil embellishes the title and illustration detail.
