Box Office Winners December 27-29 2013

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Dwarves continue to reign supreme as the holiday box office proves kid-friendly movies rule. ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ took in almost $30 Million dollars at the box office to keep it’s number 1 spot while Disney’s ‘Frozen’ cooly iced its way to second place with just under $29 Million. The heavily promoted ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues’ took in $20 Million, upping its domestic total to $83 Million, the film cost a reported $50 Million to make, and another $50 Million to promote. ‘American Hustle’ and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ came in 4th and 5th with $19 and $18 Million dollars respectively. Newbie ’47 Ronin’ tanked with less than $10 Million to end up in 9th place, the film cost a reported $200 Million (!!) dollars to make. See the entire list of box office numbers below.

Box Office Winners December 20-22 2013

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The battle between Dwarves and 1980’s newsmen is over, and the dwarves are victorious! ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ earned over $31 Million dollars this weekend, enough to allow it to keep its Box Office crown for another week. Meanwhile ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues’ earned a respectable $26 Million, clearly not as big as Paramount was hoping, the film reportedly cost $50 Million to make, plus another $50 Million (or more) on very very heavy promotion. ‘Frozen’ is in the 3rd spot this week warning $19 Million, upping its total gross to $191 domestically. Jennifer Lawrence’s second film playing in theatres, ‘American Hustle’ earned a cool $19 Million, this film is getting a big boost from award nomination predictions and heavy promotion, meanwhile ‘Saving Mr. Banks’ came in at $9.3 Million this weekend. Box Office Winners December 13-15 2013

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

As expected the second installment of ‘The Hobbit’, ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ blew away all competitors at the box office this weekend with a $73.6 Million dollar haul, less than ‘An Unexpected Journey’ however, which took in $84.6 Million opening weekend. Disney’s ‘Frozen’ took in a still impressive $22 Million, upping its total to $164 Million domestic so far. Coming in 3rd is ‘Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas’, meanwhile ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ is still setting fire to the box office with another $13 Million, adding to its total of $356 Million domestic so far, the film has serious potential to be the biggest film of the year as it creeps closely to ‘Iron Man 3’s’ $409 Million. Box Office Winners December 6-8 2013

Frozen

The fire is out as ‘Frozen’ has eclipsed ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ to win the top spot at the box office, however it was a close call. The Disney film took in an estimated $31.6 Million over the weekend while ‘Catching Fire’ earned $27 Million. Newcomer ‘Out of the Furnace’ only managed a underwhelming $5.3 Million while the God of thunder ‘Thor: The Dark World’ is still hanging on to 4th place with $4.7 Million. Box Office Winners November 22-24 2013

Hunger Games: Catching Fire

As expected ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ dominated the box office with a very impressive $161 Million dollar haul domestically (it has taken in over $300 Million worldwide so far). Last Week’s number 1 ‘Thor: The Dark World’ is holding on strong with a distant, but relatively good $14 Million, the movie will soon crack the top 10 biggest earners of 2013. ‘The Best Man Holiday’ continues to impress with a $12.5 Million dollar haul, good enough for 3rd place. Meanwhile it seems the counter-programming experiment that was ‘Delivery Man’ did not seem to pan out, as the film opened with an unimpressive $8 take a the box office. Thor the Dark World Banner 2

Once again the God of Thunder held off the competition as ‘Thor: The Dark World’ dominated the box office with $38 Million this weekend. Newbie ‘The Best Man Holiday’ surprised box office pundits by coming in second with a $30 Million dollar haul. The rest of the pack were miles behind as the 3rd and 4th place spots went to ‘Last Vegas’ and ‘Free Birds’ with $8.8 and $8.3 Million. ‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grampa’ is still going strong with an estimated take of $7.6 Million dollars, the films total domestic haul is just over $90 Million dollars. Box Office Winners November 8-10 2013

Thor: The Dark World

As expected the God of thunder rolled over the competition this weekend as ‘Thor: The Dark World’ made its way to North American box offices, the film made an estimated $86.1 Million dollars, adding to its worldwide total to $327,009,000 (the film was released earlier across the globe). The next 3 biggest earners at the box office, despite being miles away from ‘Thor’ did fairly well among themselves, ‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa’, ‘Free Birds’ and ‘Last Vegas’ coming in second, third and forth place with $11.3, $11.18 and $11.10 Million dollars respectively.
