25 Years Ago: “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” Released

indiana jones and the last crusade

On May 24th, 1989 Paramount Pictures and Lucasfilm released the 3rd installment in the Indiana Jones franchise: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford are in top form in what can be considered one of the best outings for Indy, this film is more in keeping with the original’s sense of adventure, mystery and mythology. Spielberg himself has admitted that ‘Temple of Doom’, released 5 years earlier, was too dark and depressing, ‘Crusade’ lightens the theme while creating the same sense of danger and escapism.

Dr. Jones receives a mysterious package from his estranged father, Henry Jones, the contents are just as bizarre as their origins. Indy soon discovers that his father has disappeared while on assignment in Italy, an assignment to find the Holy Grail, the cup Jesus is said to have used during the last supper. His adventure begins in Italy where he is soon met by his father’s assistant, the lovely Elsa, but soon sends them on a worldwind adventure that sees the Jones family fighting Nazi’s, Holy Warriors and meeting knights from the middle ages!

Forbes Names 2013’s Biggest Box Office Flop

The Wikileaks biopic The Fifth Estate has been named as 2013’s biggest box office flop by Forbes magazine.

The financial publication revealed that the film, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange and was directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Bill Condon, only took $6 million (£3.6 million) at the box office and, subsequently, made a return of just 21% on its $28 million (£17.1 million) budget.

The Sylvester Stallone action flick Bullet To The Head was in second place after taking $9 million (£5.52 million) on a budget of $25 million (£15.3 million) for a return of 36%, while the thriller Paranoia starring Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman was in third after making a return of just 39% with takings of $13.5 million (£8.2 million) from a $35 million (£21.4 million) budget.

Parker, the heist thriller starring British actor Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez, was the year’s fourth biggest flop after recouping only 49% of its production costs at the box office, while the presence of Mark Wahlberg and Russel Crowe wasn’t enough to stop Broken City coming in fifth after making just a 54% return.

We're the Millers

We’re the Millers

From New Line Cinema comes the action comedy “We’re the Millers,” starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis. The film is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber. David Clark (Sudeikis) is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele includes chefs and soccer moms, but no kids—after all, he has his scruples. So what could go wrong? Plenty. Preferring to keep a low profile for obvious reasons, he learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished when he tries to help out some local teens and winds up getting jumped by a trio of gutter punks. Stealing his stash and his cash, they leave him in major debt to his supplier, Brad (Ed Helms). In order to wipe the slate clean—and maintain a clean bill of health—David must now become a big-time drug smuggler by bringing Brad’s latest shipment in from Mexico. Twisting the arms of his neighbors, cynical stripper Rose (Aniston) and wannabe customer Kenny (Will Poulter), as well as streetwise teen Casey (Emma Roberts), he devises a foolproof plan. One fake wife, two pretend kids and a huge, shiny RV later, the “Millers” are headed south of the border for a Fourth of July weekend that is sure to end with a bang.
